Cilacap, 16 January 2025 - Pertamina is increasingly solid in strengthening the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) ecosystem or environmentally friendly aviation fuel through upstream to downstream business synergy. This was also emphasized by Pertamina's Director of Portfolio Strategy and Business Development A. Salyadi Saputra.
"Pertamina's commitment is in accordance with the Asta Cita of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to support energy self-sufficiency through the Sustainable Aviation Fuel roadmap. In Indonesia, the government will gradually require the use of 1% SAF in 2027 and will increase to 12.5% ??in 2040," said Salyadi.
SAF is indeed appointed as one of the most effective solutions to reduce emissions in the aviation industry, with the growth of air transportation and cargo travel in the coming period. So, starting in 2025, Pertamina together with its subsidiaries Pertamina International Refinery, Pertamina Patra Niaga, and Pelita Air Service firmly signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen the SAF ecosystem at the Cilacap Green Refinery.
Getting to Know Pertamina's Business Synergy
Pertamina has an upstream to downstream business line that is able to support the SAF supply chain comprehensively. This synergy includes research and innovation, SAF production, SAF marketing, SAF use, to creating a multiplier effect with community empowerment.
In terms of research and innovation, since 2010, Pertamina has developed a catalyst that is able to process Used Cooking Oil (UCO) or used cooking oil to be processed as SAF according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International standards. In 2024, this catalyst has been technically proven through pilot-scale trials in the Technology Innovation laboratory.
In terms of SAF production, Pertamina through PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI), has been carrying out SAF development activities since 2020 including through the Cilacap Green Refinery. In 2023, SAF produced at the Cilacap Refinery was used in joy flights on Garuda commercial flights from Jakarta to Solo.
In 2024, Cilacap Refinery which will produce SAF successfully obtained the international certification "ISCC CORSIA" (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification - Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme For International Aviation) at the Southeast Asia regional level.
KPI President Director, Taufik Aditiyawarman emphasized that as a pioneer in producing quality SAF, KPI's SAF production will provide a multiplier effect, including supporting sustainable catalysts, strengthening domestic catalyst production and becoming the first SAF produced in Indonesia and certified internationally.
In terms of SAF marketing, Pertamina through Pertamina Patra Niaga (PPN) continues to improve its capabilities in the SAF trading business. PPN has obtained international sustainability certification ISCC CORSIA and EU as a trader. The peak, at the Bali International Air Show in September 2024, PPN conducted a trial sale of SAF to airline customers at the event.
In the aviation user sector, Pertamina through the Pelita Air Service (PAS) airline is also committed to using SAF as an implementation of decarbonization actions that contribute to reducing the aviation industry in general. Several programs supported by PAS include zero emission flights using carbon credits, operational efficiency and other carbon offset programs.
Prioritize Community Involvement
Pertamina's business synergy to strengthen the SAF ecosystem is carried out by empowering the community. Through Environmental Social Responsibility activities, KPI manages the "Beo Asri Waste Bank" program, no less than 2978 families in Cilacap are empowered as collectors of used cooking oil. The collected used cooking oil will be further processed by filtration to reduce the impurity content before being processed into SAF. Collection is also carried out in the environment of the Cilacap Refinery workers' official residence.
In addition, starting in mid-December 2024, PPN has also initiated a commitment to sustainable energy by initiating the Green Movement UCO program by managing used cooking oil collection boxes at 7 points spread across the Pertamina IHC Hospital, Pelni Hospital and gas stations in the Jabodetabek & Bandung areas which can be used by the community to exchange household used cooking oil.
Through all these efforts, Pertamina is optimistic that it can contribute to achieving the Net Zero Emission vision in the aviation industry. In the future, Pertamina will proactively synergize with stakeholders to continue to maintain Asta Cita energy self-sufficiency by focusing on environmentally friendly energy.
