Inspirational! Pertamina Refinery Involves the Community in Collecting Used Cooking Oil to Make SAF

Jakarta, 17 January 2025 - Used Cooking Oil (UCO) or commonly known as used cooking oil turns out to have many uses. Items that were previously considered household waste have been widely used for various purposes. PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) will also produce Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) which is made from UCO.

To support the formation of the SAF ecosystem, KPI is strengthening community involvement in collecting used cooking oil through one of the Social and Environmental Responsibility programs at the Cilacap Refinery.

"Through the Cilacap Refinery, we are developing the Beo Asri waste bank empowerment program. The Beo Asri program is KPI's flagship initiative which aims to support environmental preservation while encouraging community economic empowerment," said KPI Corporate Secretary, Hermansyah Y Nasroen.

This waste bank program also focuses on collecting used cooking oil from households organized in 2,978 families (KK) consisting of 10 RW in Tegalreja Village.

This program, said Hermansyah, has a positive impact on the environment. Structured management of used cooking oil can minimize environmental pollution, especially in water sources that are often polluted by careless disposal of used cooking oil.

"With an average collection of 200 liters of used cooking oil per month, this program is a real contribution to reducing environmental pollution so that it is in line with KPI's commitment to maintaining environmental sustainability," said Hermansyah.

Through the development of used cooking oil collection based on fostered waste bank management, there is potential for collaboration with 40 waste banks in Cilacap to be involved in this used cooking oil collection activity. So there is the potential for collecting 1 Ton of Used Cooking Oil Per Month from the Cilacap City Community.

In addition to providing a positive impact on the environment, this program also provides direct economic benefits to the fostered community.

"During the implementation of the program, there was an economic increase during 2024 in the communities involved. This shows that the management of used cooking oil can be a business opportunity and a source of additional income for the communities involved," explained Hermansyah.

Hermansyah also emphasized KPI's commitment to continue supporting sustainability-based programs, both from an environmental and economic perspective.

"The Beo Asri Waste Bank Program is one of the real proofs of our commitment to synergize with the community to create a greener future and strengthen inclusivity," he said.

"We hope that this program can be an inspiration for other communities to contribute to protecting the environment and utilizing local economic potential," concluded Hermansyah.
