Pertamina Ready to Build Its Largest Rooftop Solar Power Plant at Balikpapan Refinery

Balikpapan, 24 October 2024 - The Pertamina Group synergy between PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional and Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), is ready to install a rooftop Solar Power Plant (PLTS) with a capacity of 2.5 MWp at the Balikpapan Refinery. This PLTS will be the largest rooftop PLTS installed in Pertamina's operational area.

Pertamina NRE Project & Operations Director, Norman Ginting said that the collaboration carried out in building this Solar Power Plant (PLTS) is something that is a concrete commitment from Pertamina.

"I really appreciate and am enthusiastic about this strategic collaboration. This is not our first collaboration with Pertamina Internasional Refinery in a PLTS utilization project in the refinery area. Pertamina NRE is committed to continuing to support efforts to reduce emissions in Pertamina's operational areas, especially since the PLTS to be built at the Balikpapan Refinery will be the PLTS with the largest capacity in Pertamina. We are very pleased that this collaboration continues," said Norman at the PLTS construction commencement ceremony.

Adding to this, the Director of Operations of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional, Didik Bahagia also said that the construction of this PLTS is a form of real contribution and cooperation, as well as a special stepping stone as a process of Pertamina's commitment to always utilize new renewable energy and maintain environmental sustainability.

"This PLTS ceremony is a special milestone as a process of Pertamina's commitment in order to reduce emissions to achieve Net Zero Emission which must be achieved in 2060. If this PLTS is successful and completed, then the total PLTS at PT KPI as a whole from Dumai to Balikpapan will be 12.37 MWp," said Didik.

The PLTS will be installed on the roof of the HSSE building, warehouse, and workshop building in the Balikpapan refinery area. By installing the PLTS, the Balikpapan Refinery has the potential to reduce emissions by 2,736 tons of CO2 equivalent per year. Currently, the PLTS that have been installed and are operating in the KPI operational area are spread across 4 refinery areas with a total capacity of 9.87 MWp, namely in the Dumai Refinery, Balongan Refinery, Cilacap Refinery, and Plaju Refinery. With the addition of the rooftop PLTS at the Balikpapan Refinery, the installed capacity of the PLTS in the KPI refinery area reaches 12.37 MWp with a total potential emission reduction of 12,722 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.

Not only that, Didik also gave his appreciation for the operational performance and cost optimization of PT KPI which showed good performance.

"Currently, operational performance and cost optimization show good performance. In the process, our sweat is pouring and giving the best results for the company," said Didik.

Didik hopes that the construction of this PLTS will be a mutual symbiosis with PNRE as an effort to reduce losses, and can maintain PT KPI's operations to continue running normally.

"Currently the Revamp program has ended, let's keep it operating normally so that next year we can complete the RFCC for additional capacity. Hopefully the mutual symbiosis carried out with PNRE can provide a high contribution to the company, such as the construction of this PLTS and others," concluded Didik.
