Jakarta, 12 February 2025 - Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) have officially established a partnership to develop the Flare Gas to Power project. This agreement was marked by the signing of the Head of Agreement (HOA) by Pertamina NRE CEO, John Anis, and Pertamina Internasional Refinery President Director, Taufik Aditiyawarman, at Grha Pertamina, Jakarta (12/02). In parallel, a project expose activity was also held at the Balongan Refinery, which will be the location for the implementation of this project.
John Anis, as CEO of Pertamina NRE, said that the Flare Gas to Power Project is a strategic step for Pertamina in supporting the energy transition and achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060. This technology utilizes flare gas to be converted into electrical energy. "This initiative is in line with our vision to optimize existing energy resources, while significantly reducing carbon emissions," said John Anis.
Technically, Flare Gas to Power works by capturing exhaust gas through flares that were previously burned in the air to be further processed through a purification system and directed to a gas turbine or generating machine. The energy produced is then used for refinery operations or distributed to the electricity grid. "This process not only increases energy efficiency but also helps protect the environment," added John
Taufik Aditiyawarman, President Director of KPI, emphasized that through this synergy, KPI has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 thousand tons of Co2Eq per year, reduce gas consumption for boilers by around 2.5 MMSCFD (Million Standard Cubic Feed per Day) and save fuel costs of more than 9 million USD per year. This means that this project not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also increases refinery operational efficiency.
The synergy between KPI and Pertamina NRE in this project is a concrete example of how strategic collaboration within Pertamina is able to produce innovative solutions that have a positive impact, both in terms of the environment and the economy. "We believe that this collaboration will be an inspiration for other energy projects in the future," concluded Taufik
Pertamina is optimistic that this project will be one of the important milestones in the journey towards cleaner and more sustainable energy. With the collaboration between these two subholdings, it is hoped that more similar innovations will emerge that support emission reduction and energy resource optimization.
